Many of us spend a large amount of time giving to others, whether it is making time for our friends or undertaking duties for family members.
But our kindnesses can sometimes be limited to people we know, or whatever we feel most comfortable offering. After all, many of us have been brought up to believe it’s important to mind our own business.
Limiting our giving in this way though, can prevent us from being truly involved in our communities, or from making small contributions to big changes, like poverty or the climate crisis.
The truth is that we can’t know where a small act of giving could lead, until we do it.
It’s easy to get wrapped up in our busy lives, and forget to pick up the phone, write a letter, or tell someone we appreciate them. The giving activities in this book require you to make a conscious effort, in order to transform your innate generosity into a habit of action.
Here are some starting points for small ways you can give back to those in the community around you. Remember that the more we give to life, the more we open channels for life to give back to us:
Today, leave a book you’ve really enjoyed in a public place with a note explaining why you love it and want to share it with whoever finds it.
Don’t doubt for a moment that your beloved book will fall into the hands of exactly the person who needs it write now.
Do something for the community you live in. Pick up litter at a local beauty spot, wash the dirt from a road sign to help others find the way more easily, donate groceries to the nearest food bank and old coats and jackets to a local homeless charity.
Write a thank you card to someone who made a difference in your life telling them how, and expressing your gratitude.
